Interior Design Inspiration From Paris Design Week

23 January 2018

I have just returned from the most inspiring few days in Paris at their annual Design Week. From visiting the huge Maison & Objet exhibition and seeing the new collections at Deco Off there are a few trends that have stood out to me.

OLD WORLD CRAFTS FOR MODERN DAY DESIGN

In a world where automation is becoming the norm it is wonderful to find family businesses where the focus is still on the craft and handmade designs.

For me, two wallpaper specialists really stood out. I had the privilege of meeting Claude Gurney of DeGourney, who spoke about how he established the company and still continues the traditions of hand painted wallpapers. Drawing on tradition for inspiration, their wallpapers are handpainted by skills artisans.

Fromental take a similar approach in using talented craftspeople. Tim Butcher and Lizzie Deshayes are passionate about their craft. The creative team is a collobration of talented designers and craftsmen in China. They combine traditional crafts with new techniques to produce unique designs, often using influences from fashion. The example below is based on collage techniques. So clever and original.

Both these companies have no desire to be the biggest companies in the world, as the specialist talent it takes to produce these wallpapers is so scarce. Instead they prefer to focus on ensuring the integrity of their craft. Of course these wallpapers are not for the budget end of the market and are a true investment. When you buy these kind of products you are buying into a story, which goes far beyond the beauty of the product iself.

NATURE INSPIRED LIGHTING

Lighting was a highlight for me at Mason & Objet. Nature will always be an inspiration for designers but this year in particular stood out. I loved these nature inspired lights at Art et Floritude, which are are just stunning.

FRINGES

Fringing has come back in a huge way. Bullion fringe, a look once reserved for stately or traditional homes, has a new lease of life. This traditional stye of trim has been given a more modern and glamorous make over. Not for everyone but it can add a fun element when applied in a modern way.

Brush fringes are also back in fashion and look great as trim on cushions. Houles have just produced a new collection of  fringes with linen edges which I loved and would look great in a modern country interior.

BASKETRY AND WICKERWORK

This isn’t a new trend as such but what I noticed is how clever this type of craft can be. It can be both budget and more high end and innovative. I came across the work of Atelier Vime at the Ancien & Moderne pop up in Paris. This small company are based in the heart of Provence and make wonderfully original pieces. Take the example of this lovely cabinet below. It had such texture and depth to it.

There was so many other examples at Maison & Objet. This is a trend that works well in country interiors if pieces are selected carefully.
